TeenHealthInfo on drugs:Illegal drugs are a growing problem among teenagers. Below you'll find a list of all of the most common drugs on the streets today and the dangerous effects they may cause. Please use the box below to search for a slang name, as opposed to the real name of the drug. Next to each drug are the slang/street names and any important information that you may need. At the bottom of the page we list resources for anyone who needs help with an addiction to or a dependency on drugs. Be sure to check out our Frequent Q & A section for answers to questions teens are asking about drugs. -Amphetamines- aka: wake ups, ups, uppers, speed, bennies, black beauties, dexies, jollies These drugs stimulate the nervous system, they can be inhaled, injected, swallowed, or snorted. They also cause increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism; feelings of exhilaration, energy, increased mental alertness, rapid or irregular heart beat; reduced appetite, weight loss, and heart failure. It can also cause rapid breathing; hallucinations/ tremor, loss of coordination; irritability, anxiousness, restlessness, delirium, panic, paranoia, impulsive behavior, aggressiveness, tolerance, addiction. -Anorectic Drugs- These drugs have been used as appetite suppressants, they produce the same effects as amphetamines but are less potent. -Barbiturates- aka: reds and blues, barbs, block busters, goof balls, Christmas trees, pinks, red devils, yellows, yellow jackets They can be injected or swallowed, initially causes the lowering of inhibitions, slowed pulse, low blood pressure, poor concentration. Long term effects can include fatigue, depression, addiction, and poor concentration. -Cocaine/Crack- aka: big C, blow, coke, flake, freebase, lady, white, nose candy, rock, snow, snowbirds It is injected, smoked or snorted. Cocaine causes increased temperature, chest pain, respiratory failure, nausea, abdominal pain, strokes, seizures, headaches and malnutrition. They also cause increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism; feelings of exhilaration, energy, increased mental alertness, rapid or irregular heart beat; reduced appetite, weight loss, and heart failure. -DOM, DOB, MDA, MDMA, 2C-B These drugs are swallowed, they cause mild hallucinogenic effects, increased tactile sensitivity, empathic feelings, hyperthermia/impaired memory and learning as well as increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism; feelings of exhilaration, energy, increased mental alertness/rapid or irregular heart beat; reduced appetite, weight loss, heart failure. -DXM- aka: dex, robo, tussin It is swallowed and causes sweating, nausea, diarrhea, seizures, irregular heartbeat, numbness, hyperactivity, hallucinations. -Ecstasy- aka: adam, XTC, bean, E, M, roll, X Ecstasy is swallowed and its short term affects include confusion, depression, sleep problems, severe anxiety, and paranoia, involuntary teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, rapid eye movement, faintness, and chills or sweating. Long term effects can include memory loss. -GHB- aka: G, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, liquid ecstacy GHB is swallowed and causes drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, headache, seizures, coma, and death. -Hashish This can be swallowed or smoked, it initially causes euphoria, confusion and impaired balance. Long term effects can include impaired memory and learning, frequent respiratory infections, anxiety and panic attacks. -Herbal Ecstasy- aka: X, ultimate Xphoria, cloud 9, rave energy Herbal ecstasy is a term used to describe a combination of herbs that are legal, it is swallowed, smoked, or snorted. It can cause heart attacks, strokes, and seizures. -Heroin- aka: Big H, black tar, brown sugar, dope, horse, junk, mud, skag, smack Heroin is injected, smoked or snorted, it causes the relief from pain, euphoria, drowsiness, nausea, confusion, constipation, sedation, unconsciousness, coma, tolerance, and addiction. -Ice Ice is a slang term for a very pure, smokeable form of methamphetamine. It is an extremely addictive stimulant. Its effects are similar to those of cocaine but longer lasting it can cause coma, death, or stroke. -Inhalants These are regular products that are found in homes. The fumes are inhaled and give a high. They can make a user lose inhibitions, and sometimes consciousness as well as headache, muscle weakness, mood swings, fatigue and lack of coordination. Long term use can cause heart failure, brain damage and death -Ketamine- aka: special K, breakfast cereal, date rape drug, ketaject, ketalar, new ecstasy, psychedelic heroin, super K, vitaminK Can be injected, snorted, or smoked. It increases your heart rate and blood pressure, can cause delirium, depression, and respiratory distress. Can cause long term memory loss, and numbness. -LSD- aka: sugar cubes, microdot, doses, hits, trips, tabs LSD is swallowed, absorbed. It causes altered states of perception and feeling, nausea, chronic mental disorders, and flashbacks as well as increased body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure; loss of appetite, sleeplessness, numbness, weakness, tremors. -Marijuana- aka: weed, skunk, sinsemilla, reefer, pot, mary jane, kit, herb, hash, grass, gangster, dope ganja, Aunt Mary, boom, chronic It can be swallowed or smoked, it initially causes euphoria, confusion and impaired balance. Long term effects can include impaired memory and learning, frequent respiratory infections, anxiety and panic attacks. -Methamphetamine- aka: speed, fire, glass, chalk, crank, croak, crypto, white cross, crystal meth This can be injected, swallowed, smoked, or snorted. It causes increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism; feelings of exhilaration, energy, increased mental alertness/rapid or irregular heart beat; reduced appetite, weight loss, heart failure as well as aggression, violence, psychotic behavior/memory loss, cardiac and neurological damage; impaired memory and learning, tolerance, addiction. -Methaqualone- aka: Quaalude, sopor, parest This can cause euphoria (state of extreme happiness), depression, coma, poor reflexes and slurred speech. -Methcathinone- aka: The C, mulka, Jeff, bathtub speed, cadillac express, cat, ephedrone, gagers, goob, speed, wildcat wonder star It is snorted, the short-term effects of methcathinone include: stimulation of heart rate and respiration; feeling of euphoria; loss of appetite; increased alertness, dilated pupils, and temperature may be slightly elevated. Intoxication at higher doses may also result in insomnia, tremors and muscle twitching, fever, headaches, convulsions, irregular heart rate and respirations, anxiety, restlessness, paranoia, hallucinations and delusions. Chronic use can cause a sensation of bugs crawling under the skin, anxiety followed by depression, tremors and convulsions, anorexia, malnutrition, and weight loss, sweating, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance, stomach pains and nausea, nose bleeding and eventual destruction of nasal tissues -Mushrooms- aka: shrooms, caps, magic mushrooms They can be eaten, or brewed in tea. Cause decrease in blood pressure, memory loss, nausea, loss of appetite, depression and violence. -Psilocybin and Psilocyn- aka: mushrooms, mushies, magic mushrooms, liberty caps, cubes, shrooms, psilocybes This is swallowed and causes altered states of perception and feeling; nausea/chronic mental disorders, flashbacks, nervousness and paranoia. -Ritalin- aka: pineapple, kibbles & bits It can be injected, swallowed, or snorted. It may cause an increase or decrease in blood pressure, psychotic episodes/digestive problems, loss of appetite, weight loss as well as increased heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism; feelings of exhilaration, energy, increased mental alertness/rapid or irregular heart beat; reduced appetite, weight loss, heart failure. -Rohypnol- aka: rophies, date rape drug, ruffies, the forget pill, La Roche, R2, rib, roofenol, roofies, rope This is a common date rape drug and can be put into a drink without taste or smell. It causes memory loss for a short time, visual disturbances and urinary retention. -Steroids (anabolic)- aka: juice, rhoids They are injected and swallowed.
